Homework Expectations for Mrs. Scranton's Third Grade Class
1. After School Reading (Any 4 days in the week) Download OPTIONAL Reading Response Sheet here
· Students are expected to read for 20 minutes, 4 times a week.
· Parents need to initial your child's planner stating your child read for 20 minutes, 4 times a week.
Example:
After School Reading Reflection
Week of: Sept. 30
Monday
Date: 9-30-14
Text I read and pages: Fantastic Mr. Fox, p. 1-23
Today in my text the farmers try a new strategy to get Mr. Fox out of his hole. They think they will finally get Mr. Fox. Once again the talented Mr. Fox out smarts them and ends up with several chickens in preperation for their feast.
Parent/Adult Initial: AS
2. Math Talks (Once a week)
If homework is not completed for the day, your child will miss afternoon recess on the day the homework is due in order to complete the missing assignment.
Homework will be checked for a completion grade but is not graded for accuracy. The goal of homework is to practice the skills learned in class, it’s valuable practice.
If the assignment is forgotten at school, please insist that your child still use their regular homework time on alternative activities: write a letter, read a book or magazine, practice math facts, summarize what they are learning in social studies/science, discuss a book they have recently finished. That night’s assignment still needs to be completed by the due date.
Your time is valuable and when your child sees you willing to take time to look at what they are doing in school, the message is clear that school is important. If your child is already a reliable student, the rewards will be intrinsic. However, if your child does not feel proud of their accomplishments or if it is a struggle to get through schoolwork, you might consider small rewards at first. Remember, you are helping your child develop good life skills.
